Andre wanted the world to show him some design flair, and you answered in hordes. Among our many faaabulous entries, we painstakingly picked out the winners. This week, we check check out Goh Chun Siang, champion of Andre’s Costume Design Contest held a few months ago…
Say hello to everybody.
My name is Goh Chun Siang. I'm a freelance artist in Singapore.
How long have you played GE? What attracted you to the game?
I’ve been playing GE since the game first launched here but it was initially pay-to-play, so I only played for the free-to-play period. Finally, it became completely free-to-play and I jumped back in. This game has great set designs and combat like no other MMORPG. I’m glad players can experience all of this for free now.
Do you have any art/design background?
I’ve never gone through any art or design school. Everything I drew for the contest is self-taught or learnt from books, and my art-inclined friends.
What were your inspirations for the winning entry?
Miko of course! (Japanese female Shaman/Priestess) GE is not a Japan-themed game, but there’s room for new costume designs like Japanese, Korean or Chinese costumes, or even introducing a new Japanese character. It’s the New World after all!
What was going through your mind as you turn your concept into reality?
I wasn't thinking about the buffs or how other gamers think; I was only thinking about how to make it look really special.
How long did you take to finish the design?
About 4-5 days. I had a first version of the miko costume, but it was a really "normal" one that real mikos actually wear in real life. I decided to make another one because the first design didn't had much impact in a fantasy game world like GE.
What software/tools did you use?
Photoshop CS2 and Painter 10.
What was your design process?
The costume’s outline was drawn on paper with a G nib pen, then scanned into my computer at 300 DPI. I coloured it with Painter, and did colour correction in Photoshop.
How confident were you in winning? Did you expect it?
I wasn't expecting to win at all! I just wanted to make a costume that was not in the game, and try some new Photoshop techniques in the process.
Got any wish list for the future of GE?
Hope to see my design appearing in the game in 3D!!
